The Aarke Purifier and filter granules

The Aarke Purifier is a glass and stainless steel water filter jug with no plastic carafe and no plastic cartridges. Instead of a sealed cartridge you throw away, you pour filter granules into a refillable stainless steel cartridge. It comes in two sizes, the Purifier (1.18 litres of filtered water) and the Purifier Large (1.66 litres), and both use the same granules.

What does it filter?

It reduces:

  • chlorine, which improves the taste and smell of tap water
  • heavy metals such as lead and copper
  • limescale, with Pure and Boost granules

It doesn't filter fluoride, microplastics, viruses, hormones or medicine residues. It's designed to make your tap water taste better and reduce limescale, not to purify water that isn't safe to drink.

Which granules should I choose?

There are three types, so you can match them to your water:

  • Pure is the everyday choice for hard water. It reduces limescale, chlorine and heavy metals. Less limescale also means less build-up in your kettle and coffee maker. A bag of Pure comes with every new Purifier.
  • Enriched is made for soft water. It reduces chlorine and heavy metals, then adds magnesium and raises the pH for mineralised, alkaline water. It doesn't reduce limescale, so if your kettle furs up, Pure or Boost is the better pick.
  • Boost is new, and it's for hard water and anyone who takes their coffee or tea seriously. Like Pure, it reduces limescale, chlorine and heavy metals, then adds magnesium and zinc to help bring out the flavour in coffee and tea.

Refill packs contain three bags, so three months' supply: https://www.faerly.ie/products/aarke-water-purifier-filter-granules-3-refill-bags

The granules are made for Aarke's refillable cartridge and won't work in other filter jugs.

What are the granules made from, and where are they made?

The granules are a mix of activated carbon and ion exchange resin. Enriched and Boost also add minerals (magnesium, plus zinc in Boost). They were developed with BWT, the Austrian water technology company, and are made in Austria.

How often should I change them?

Every 4 weeks or 120 litres, whichever comes first. Use the dial on the lid to keep track of when you last changed them. Filtering takes 3 to 5 minutes per litre.

How do I change the granules?

  1. Twist off the bottom of the stainless steel cartridge, empty out the used granules and give the cartridge a wash.
  2. Pour in a full bag of granules and twist the bottom back on.
  3. Soak the filled cartridge in a jug of water for 5 minutes, then pour that water away.
  4. Fit the cartridge in your Purifier, fill the carafe at the tap and let it filter through.

How do I dispose of used granules?

Used granules aren't compostable, so please put them in your general waste. The refill box is recyclable paper and the bags are recyclable plastic. The cartridge itself is stainless steel and isn't thrown away, you just keep refilling it.

Cleaning your Purifier

  • The whole Purifier is dishwasher safe at 60°C, including the glass carafe, the hopper and the empty cartridge.
  • Take the granules out before the cartridge goes in the dishwasher.
  • Between granule changes, Aarke recommends boiling the cartridge (with the granules still in it) for 3 minutes once a week to keep it hygienic.
  • For limescale, use a limescale remover. Don't use steel wool.

Storing granules

Keep unopened bags sealed, somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.

Spare parts

If something gets broken, you don't need to replace the whole Purifier. Replacement glass carafes are available for both sizes, so get in touch and we'll help you find the right part.
